Link diary: things I've read/watched/played online lately which I've found interesting

Yume Nikki Online Project
Cool and creepy to walk around in. Am I playing it wrong; is there something else I'm supposed to be doing?

2025 - thomaswc.com
Multiple full evenings sunk into this. Dry eyes, cricked neck, Tetris syndrome when I'd try to sleep. Squares drifting into my dreams. Finished it though, didn't I! With help from friends and a bit of brute force. See also: this fangame which I haven't attempted yet for the sake of my health, but which is burning a lovely hole in my pocket of open tabs.

"I will only accept being my own genre": an interview with Porpentine - The Isis
'I write for the tastes considered juvenile or embarrassing. Chuunicore. I want to make the world’s best hamburger, and I want it to give you the world’s best food poisoning, and it’s not a hamburger, it’s your arm.': One of my favourite quotes I've ever read in an interview.

Anatomy of an affair - A reading life
This Substack article really sold me on the idea of noting down intertexts wherever they appear in a book you're enjoying.

Velvetyne
Super cool fonts.

The Character of Holland by Andrew Marvell
A diss poem about the Netherlands. 'This indigested vomit of the sea / Fell to the Dutch by just propriety.' Ouch! Showed it to my friend who learned Dutch and she informed me about the Anglo-Dutch wars, which I probably should have known about. Makes more sense; though I liked it more when I thought it was a completely uncalled-for attack.

Grey Gardens (1975)
A documentary about the reclusive aunt and first cousin of Jackie Onassis, both named Edith Beale and living in a dilapidated mansions called Grey Gardens. Very funny and very sad.

Pottage - Wikipedia
In theory I think it's good to eat foods that can be grown locally to you, and in practice I live in the UK. Out of curiosity I once tried looking up what non-rich people ate hundreds of years ago, hoping someone in all this time would have come up with some clever and delicious way to eat turnips, but actually discovered that all anyone ate was pottage. Occasionally for a special occasion there would be some different kind of pottage with dried fruits in. We are fucked. We are beyond fucked. Hundreds of years (and untold acts of violence committed across the world) just to move beyond pottage. Hate for the island. On the other hand I was interested in this list of ingredients from a 17th-century pottage: 'made by boiling mutton and oatmeal with violet leaves, endive, chicory, strawberry leaves, spinach, langdebeefe, marigold flowers, scallions and parsley'. Lots of greens I'd never considered eating here. And it never occurred to anybody to make a nice salad?!

Listen to This
Cool and expansive music blog with some downloads (I haven't tested any of the downloads).

The Story I'm Thinking Of by Jonathan Gibbs
A short story I really enjoyed.

The Aberdeen Bestiary
Some of my favourite and most expressive illustrations. I've been drawing some of my own pseudo-Medieval beasts recently but a project I've been meaning to start is to do some studies of these.
